NYC Handgun License Renewal Guide
Step by step instructions to renew a New York City handgun license online with the NYPD License Division.
Where You Can Carry — See the Map
What You Need Before You Start
Have these ready as JPEG or PDF files. The portal will not let you continue until every required document shows a check mark.
All License Types
- Photo ID: state driver's license, learner's permit or non-driver ID. Retired law enforcement: also the front and back of your retired law enforcement ID.
- Proof of date of birth (one): U.S. birth certificate, valid (unexpired) U.S. passport book or card, military record (DD214), valid green card, or naturalization/citizenship certificate.
- Color photo: US passport standard, taken in the last 30 days, 2" x 2", plain white background, no glasses, no hats except religious or medical headwear, facing the camera, neutral expression. JPEG, at least 600 x 600 pixels. See the State Department photo guide.
- Proof of residence (one): electric, gas, landline or cable/home-internet bill (include the service details page), or a signed rental agreement. Entire page, no redactions, no more than 60 days old, in good standing. Not accepted: property tax, water, maintenance, cell phone, credit card, insurance, bank or pension statements, notice of property value, mortgage statement.
- Affidavit of Cohabitant (updated form): signed and notarized by every adult (18+) living with you. If you live alone or with minors only, complete the lower portion, sign and date it, and do not notarize.
- Safeguard ID: driver's license or non-driver ID of the person you designate to safeguard your firearms. No passports. The safeguard must live in New York State.
- Your current firearm licenses: front and back, plus any other license or permit from another state, county or jurisdiction, and an HR218/LEOSA card if you have one.
- DMV lifetime abstract for every state you lived in during the last 5 years, if your residence changed since your last application.
- Anything new since your last application: arrests, criminal court, OATH or Transit Adjudication summonses (certificate of disposition, written statement, and a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities where applicable); any new domestic incident report or order of protection (written statement and copy).
Concealed Carry and Special Carry (in Addition)
- Proof of the DCJS-approved 16-hour classroom and 2-hour live-fire course from a duly authorized instructor. The packet says the 2-hour live-fire course must accompany your three-year renewal and be completed within 6 months of each renewal application. New York State says renewing an NYC concealed carry license requires this training (gunsafety.ny.gov). Confirm the timing in the portal.
- Special Carry: front and back of your active NYS county license, which must be full/unrestricted carry.
- Retired law enforcement: see the HR218 note in the FAQ below.
Premise Business Licenses (in Addition)
- Certificate of incorporation, business certificate or partnership agreement.
- All current business licenses, permits, certificates or registrations. Expired ones are not accepted.
- Proof of business (two): signed and filed NYS or federal corporate tax return with business name and address; current signed and dated lease; current business utility bill (no more than 60 days old).
- Photos of the business showing its name and address, and the interior, if that information changed since your last application.
How to Renew Online
- Go to licensing.nypdonline.org and click
in the upper right corner.
- You already have an account. Do not create a new one.
- Log in. Your username is the email address you first registered with. If you forgot the password, use "Forgot Your Password?". A new password needs at least 9 characters with one number, one symbol and one capital letter.
- Click the account icon
in the top right. It may show your name or photo.
- Once signed in, click the Start New tile.

- When asked if you are renewing an existing license, answer Yes. Click the magnifying glass
and the site finds your license number. Click Select and begin.
Partly done? The NYPD portal says an application left "In Progress" after October 16, 2026 can no longer be viewed, edited or submitted. If yours was removed, start a new application once the new system is available.
Find Forms and Upload Documents
Find the Forms
- Log in and click the account icon
at the top right.
- Select Forms, download what you need, complete it, and save it.
Upload Documents
- Log in and open the Submitted tile.

- Click your application number. A screen opens where you upload missing documents. Pick the right application, because uploads do not carry over to your other applications.
- The packet says the system does not show your documents after you upload them, and that your investigator will email you if anything is missing. Check that each required item shows a check mark before you move on.
Fee and Payment
From the packet:
- Online (City Pay): e-check (up to 10 business days to process) or credit card (2% fee, processed almost instantly). The card must be in your name.
- In person: credit card, money order or bank check payable to "New York City Police Department". No personal checks. No cash.
- E-check: shows on your bank statement within 24 hours but takes 10 to 15 business days to clear. You then get an email titled "Acknowledgment of Receipt of Renewal", and your application is reviewed.
Pay by credit card.
We strongly suggest paying by credit card. The packet says card payments are processed almost instantly.
In my experience, a payment by check can take 30 days or more for the NYPD to clear. Sometimes you have to call the NYPD Firearms Unit, spend hours on the phone just to get through, and ask them to search for your payment by hand and apply it to your application.
To track your status, log in and click Submitted. The stages are submitted, investigation, approved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Stuck at Step 15? The packet says this happens only on Apple or Mac devices. Use another device with Chrome. You will see a page to confirm the safety rules by typing your initials in the boxes on the left.
Utilities are included in my rent or in someone else's name? Included in rent: your lease plus a written, notarized statement from the bill payer that they own the premises and utilities are included. In someone else's name (spouse, parent): their current bill plus a notarized Affidavit of Cohabitant from the bill payer.
Step 6 lists firearms that are wrong or that I no longer own. The list shows every firearm ever attributed to you, including ones lawfully disposed of. You cannot edit it, so click Next. If a firearm you currently own has a wrong make, model or serial number, or one appears that you never owned, contact the License Division through the NYPD portal's Contact Us page (Purchase Authorization).
Step 7 (safeguard) will not let me continue. The address must use "NY" as the state, in capitals with no periods and not spelled out. The safeguard must live in New York State.
Photo upload error? Use a passport style color photo taken in the last 30 days, JPEG, at least 600 x 600 pixels, head centered, only the top of the shoulders visible.
Documents not accepted? Upload all required documents first. Each gets a check mark. Use JPEG or PDF only, with no symbols in file names.
Can a Concealed Carry license have more than two firearms? Yes, on request. Under the NYPD's rule (38 RCNY 5-25), a Concealed Carry license allows two handguns, and the NYPD can approve more if you ask. Only one can be carried at a time.
I have both Premise Residence and Concealed Carry. Per the packet, you can ask to move all firearms to the Concealed Carry license with a notarized statement listing each firearm (make, model, caliber, serial number). Say whether you want the Premise Residence license cancelled, and include front and back copies of both licenses. Applications are non-refundable.
Retired law enforcement: am I exempt from training? The packet says people who retired or were issued an HR218 between September 1, 2017 and August 31, 2022 are exempt, with retirement or HR218 proof from that window. That window is historical, so do not assume it applies to a new renewal. New York State says retired law enforcement are not exempt, though a licensing officer may credit equivalent training. Ask the License Division what it accepts for you.
"Something went wrong. Error ID..." The page was idle for about 10 minutes. Sign in again and continue where you left off.
Questions about the new law? After logging in, use the "Recent Legal Amendment FAQ's" link at the bottom of the home screen.
