What the Stages Mean Where a case can be, step by step
Tap a stage name to see it in our Glossary.
FiledThe lawsuit has been filed in a trial court, which is where the case starts.
TRO or InjunctionAn early, temporary order that pauses (or refuses to pause) the law while the case continues.
District Court RulingThe trial court has issued a main ruling. The losing side can usually appeal.
On AppealA higher court, usually a three-judge panel of a federal court of appeals, is reviewing the ruling.
En Banc ReviewThe full appeals court, not just three judges, is rehearing the case.
RemandedA higher court sent the case back to a lower court to take another look, often with instructions.
Cert Petition at SCOTUSThe losing side has asked the Supreme Court to take the case. The Court agrees to hear only a small share of these requests.
SCOTUS Granted ReviewThe Supreme Court agreed to hear the case. Written briefs and oral argument come next, then a decision.
DecidedA final decision has been issued. Depending on the court, the losing side may still be able to ask a higher court to review it.
The bar on each card shows the usual path: Filed → Lower court → Appeals → Supreme Court → Decided. Not every case goes through every step.

What it's about
Challenges to Maryland's many places where carry is banned, and its rule against carrying on private property without the owner's consent.
Where it stands
On Jan 20, 2026 the Fourth Circuit upheld most of Maryland's location bans (including government buildings, transit, schools, parks, museums, health care, stadiums, places selling alcohol and near demonstrations) but held the private-property default rule unconstitutional as to property open to the public. Maryland's own petition (Moore v. Kipke, No. 25-1206) was dismissed under Rule 46 on Aug 13, 2026. The challengers' petition is set for the Nov 6, 2026 conference.

What it's about
Challenge to the National Firearms Act's registration rules for suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and "any other weapons" after Congress cut their NFA tax to $0 in 2025.
Where it stands
Jensen v. ATF was consolidated into this case on June 8, 2026. On Aug 5, 2026 the court held that, with no tax left on these items, the NFA's regulatory provisions for them can no longer rest on Congress's taxing power, and enjoined them. Who is covered by the order is set out in the ruling.

What it's about
Challenged the federal ban on possessing or carrying firearms in post offices and on postal property (18 U.S.C. § 930(a) and the Postal Service's own regulation).
Where it stands
On September 30, 2025 the court granted summary judgment to the plaintiffs and barred enforcement of the ban against them inside ordinary post offices and on surrounding post office property; on March 17, 2026 it clarified this covers all present and future members of FPC and SAF. The government's appeal was dismissed at its own request on July 23, 2026.
